Tokushima prefecture is the easternmost gateway to the island of Shikoku, an oasis of cycling spots and hiking trails and the famous 88-temple pilgrimage. The unique geography of Tokushima, with its vast mountains and deep valley cutting through the center, forced local people to develop creative ways of surviving. See how this spirit of creativity has continued into the present day with the culture of Awa Odori, the evolution of traditional Japanese paper-making, and more.

Awaodori Night!

Traditional Japanese dancing has taken on a number of forms, and one of the more recent and unique is the Awaodori, or Awa Dance. Performed at the Awa Dance Festival, this charismatic dance is not one to be missed if you’re interested in seeking out more hidden gems of Japanese culture.

● Meet at Kansai International Airport and travel to Osaka
● Try okonomiyaki for lunch in Osaka City
● Continue on into Tokushima and experience Awaodori and dinner in a local restaurant

The Great Naruto Bridge is a 1,629-meter-long suspension bridge that connects Japan’s main island of Honshu to the island of Shikoku. Today, take a walk inside the underbelly of the bridge and get a bird’s-eye view of the whirlpool that hits its peak strength twice a day. Afterward, enjoy lunch in a traditional Japanese house, then visit Konpira-gu Shrine, dedicated to sailors and shipbuilders. A climb of 758 steps will take you to the main shrine, or you can challenge yourself to conquer all 1,368 steps all the way up to the rear shrine.

After lunch, enjoy a mild two-hour hike featuring waterfalls and other stunning scenery along the way. Once you’ve enjoyed enough of the breathtaking views from the top of Mount Tsurugi, have dinner in town or at your hotel.

Old Town Stroll and Awaji Island

An “udatsu” was a short pillar put between buildings as a fire break. In feudal times, people used the phrase “udatsu ga agaranai” or “unable to raise a fire break” to call someone economically unproductive. As such, blocks with udatsu were seen as wealthy areas. Today, explore the Udatsu Old Street in Mima City. After lunch, head to Awagami Factory for some of the most innovative approaches to bringing traditional crafts through the modern age and into the future. Finally, stop in Awaji Island for dinner and rest.

● Traditional Japanese Paper Factory
● Head to Awaji Island

Today, enjoy your final day with an exploration of Kobe, a warm and relaxed city by the harbor with the mountain range of Rokko rising behind it. For lunch, try some internationally-renowned Kobe beef, then head to Kansai International Airport for your flight.
