Among other cultural gems, there’s a calligraphy class, a visit to the sumo district, an anime masterclass, trips to local bath houses, exploration of beautiful countryside, endless shrines, temples and hiking trails. For the time and money, this is a budget Japan backpacker tour at its very best.
Tokyo: Day 1 - Meet your adventure leader at 10am and other members of your group. Your guide will brief you on your trip and discuss the itinerary. After, you explore the Asakusa District and visit the Sensō-Ji temple, an ancient Buddhist temple that became independent after WWII. For lunch, you will head to Tokyo’s iconic Tsukiji Outer Market to try some of the freshest sashimi you’ve ever tasted. In the afternoon you will witness incredible views of the city from the top of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and learn about its history. In the evening you can take part in some optional activities - (Experience some Japanese baseball at a batting cage or take a dip in a Japanese-style bathhouse).
Tokyo: Day 2 - Start the day off with a sushi-making class taught by a fabulous sushi chef, and then sample your produce. After you will visit Akihabara and immerse yourself into the world of Anime and Manga, here you can take part in an optional activity - (Get involved with an action-packed game of MariCar and dress up in a costume and race down the streets of Tokyo or enjoy a 'Made in Tokyo experience in a maid cafe!). *Please note: to participate, you must secure an international drivers permit valid in Japan before the start of the trip*. In the evening make your way to Golden Gai and experience Tokyo nightlife!
Tokyo: Day 3 - Head over to the Tokyo Imperial Palace where you will learn more about Japan’s Imperial Family. In the afternoon you will make your first stop at the fashion district of Tokyo, Harajuku and explore the Meiji Shrine in Shibuya. You will then head to Shibuya to see the controlled chaos of the world’s most famous intersection this you will visit the world's busiest crossing. Here you'll have the opportunity to take part in an optional activity - (Stop off at the Cat Café MoCHA and make some furry new friends).
Tokyo: Day 4 - In the morning make your way to Edo-Tokyo Museum and learn about what happened to Tokyo during the Edo period. After, you will have some time to take part in a couple of optional activities - (Visit the Sumo Museum and learn about the history of the sport and experience the infamous Robot Show in the evening - an experience not to be missed!
Tokyo & Kamakura: Day 5 - Enjoy a delicious brunch and then hop on a train to Kamakura. When you arrive in Kamakura you can check out some local attractions with our suggested optional activities list - (Take time to relax at the beach and rent a surfboard out *3000 JPY for a day* or learn more about local history, visit some local shrines such as the Kotoku-in Temple where you'll find the Great Buddha statue). After enjoying some free time, you will then travel to Enoshima, a small offshore island where you can spend some time exploring the temples and enjoying a drink or two at one of the beachfront bars!
Hakone: Day 6 - This morning you will travel to Hakone via train and bus. When you arrive in Hakone you will embark on a hike to Old Tokaido and indulge in some lunch near Moto-Hakone. Later on, you will get the opportunity to board a pirate ship and cross Lake Ashi where you will experience stunning views of Mount Fuji. Afterwards, you will take a cable car to Owakudani where you will try some black eggs, a local delicacy and is said to lengthen your life-span for another three years!!! In the evening you will take a relaxing dip in an outdoor bath known as an ‘Onsen’.
Kyoto: Day 7 - Make your way to Kyoto via bullet train. *approximately 2 hours*. Once you arrive in Kyoto you will pay a visit to Kiyomizu temple and take a walk through Pontocho alley, a place famous for its lanterns and wood-panelled restaurants.
Arashiyama, Kyoto: Day 8 - Start the day with a two-hour boat trip down the Hozugawa River. In your traditional wooden raft, you’ll cruise through rocky ravines and experience the rush of rapids as you meander through the Arashiyama Hills. After, you will hike through Arashiyama bamboo forest n the Western outskirts of Kyoto. Later, head to the Arashiyama Monkey Park. It's a tough climb up, but at the top, you can feed monkeys or simply enjoy the panorama of Kyoto below. In the evening take part in some Japanese karaoke with your fellow dragons.
Kyoto: Day 9 - Today you have a free day which you can use to explore attractions in the surrounding area. We suggest taking a look at the majestic temples that adorn the Philosopher’s path or check out the International Manga Museum and the Fushimi Inari Shrine.
Kyoto & Hiroshima: Day 10 - Wake up early and head to the Golden Pavilion at Kinkaku-ji temple. Here you can take part in a meditation class with a Buddhist monk. Afterwards, you will stop off at Imperial Palace and explore the grounds by a bike. Later on in the evening, hop on a bullet train and make your way to Hiroshima.
Hiroshima: Day 11 - Visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and learn about its history from World War II and how the world's first atomic bomb affected the city. After, hop on a train and a ferry to Miyajima Island. Here, you will visit the Itsukushima Shrine, a temple built on stilts and a very popular tourist spot. In the afternoon you will make your way back to your hotel and enjoy a free evening for yourselves!
Osaka: Day 12 - Today you will hop on a bullet train to Osaka. You'll arrive at lunch where you will eat in the Nanba or Shinsaibashi area. You will then take a short train ride to Osaka Castle where you can take a stroll around the grounds. After, you will have the ultimate shopping experience at Shinsaibashi where you can shop till you drop! In the evening immerse yourselves in Osaka's nightlife by attempting to become The Dragon Trip Arcade Challenge Champion. Tonight you will sleep at a capsule hotel- small, intimate, private and quintessentially Japanese.
Osaka: Day 13 - Today you will say your goodbye to your fellow Dragon Trippers and catch a bullet train back to Tokyo where you finish up or continue your travels!
